story of my life
Just thought I’d share about Ensemble Memo because it’s our ensemble’s first anniversary as a group.
Basically, it started when Francisco paid me twenty dollars to arrange a quartet version of B Rosette so we could play it together along with any other people that wanted to play with us. After we debated over who to include, we finally decided on John Chu and Joseph Oh.
It had a really crappy start to be honest. Rehearsals didn’t start until May or June, and they were a mess. “Rehearsal” started at six. From six to about eight was looking at funny videos on YouTube. At eight we ran through B Rosette about four times until ten. After that was more YouTube and torturing ourselves hearing successful musicians play until obscene hours of the night.
At first, I really doubted Francisco’s visions of making this group work, such as his expectations of getting into Kollaboration, competing with high-level performers, etc. Honestly, I didn’t work so hard, just thinking it was one of Francisco’s ploys for an easier time getting into college. But I think I knew inside that this ensemble had so much potential.
I think the time we realized we needed to step it up was Ensemble Concert in November. We really needed to make our B Rosette worked on stage, and that was the first time we took something so seriously as an ensemble. I think it was then I realized that I think Francisco is not just spitting his usual euphemisms when talking about us. As we started getting better, we got more gigs the next few months. I also think that’s when we started asking God for help in bringing us success. We prayed that we would grow as an ensemble, but we were seriously struggling from our awkward instrumentation (two violins and two cellos is not a good instrumentation).
God answered our prayers with Jonathan. Jonathan filled in for me when I wasn’t able to make it to a gig on time because of a concert. Jonathan was a miracle because our group and him just clicked. We played songs so well that we could never get with our string instruments. Also, Jonathan was way better than all of us at improvisation, songwriting, etc. Since the birthday party, Jonathan was a member of Ensemble Memo.
Looking back, God has raised Ensemble Memo from a group of rabid YouTube-obsessed teenagers into a rapidly-growing, talented quintet who will revolutionize music and leave our mark on the world. God has shown me that what seemed impossible last year can happen with hard work. This year, Ensemble Memo is on the lineup for Kollaboration Acoustic 5, and we are slowly gaining more support from people.
Though Ensemble Memo is a promising ensemble, all great things end sometime. Now that I think about it, Francisco is leaving for college this year, and the year after, John and Jonathan are next. It makes me sad to let go of this group for a while, but I hope that we could play together during breaks whenever we’re all back in California, or even jam using Oovoo and microphones. Whatever it may be, I’m sure God has a plan.
Long story short, Memo taught me what it means to be a musician, and paved the way for what I want to do with my life. Memo taught me brotherhood, and all those other cheesy virtues that PBS shows usually teach. Happy anniversary, Ensemble Memo! I love you guys! (no homo)
P.S

i’m auditioning for america’s got talent. or i was. until i read the rules today.
http://www.americasgottalentauditions.com/paperwork/AGT5_participant_release_and_info.pdf
yeap. can’t even get past the first rule. -__-
i’ve been living in america all my life, ever since i was two years old. but i’m neither an american citizen or a permanent resident of the United States of America. in fact, i am a citizen of the Republic of South Korea (daehan mingook)
how unfair is that? i’m an american (kinda) at heart. america’s pretty much my hometown and has been for thirteen years. i think i can at least make the first forty-eight acts that make the show on nbc. what right do they have to exclude me from a talent show for being a korean citizen?
i mean they have to make SOME exceptions right? remember blueprint cru from america’s best dance crew season fine? the ones who got second place to poreotix? they were canadian. they weren’t even american and yet they had the opportunity to compete with AMERICA’S best dance crews. then why can’t i compete with AMERICA’S best talents in america’s got talent?
whatever. fine. exclude me for being a korean. i don’t know. but one day i hope they realize that korean-americans have talent too.
sorry for that one senioritis post. i guess my sister accidentally went on my tumblr instead of hers.
I WANT ONE.
story of my life. old video but still good. hahahah
Day 4- Seven things that cross your mind a lot.
not much crosses my mind. i’m not the type of person who thinks too hard. but seven random things off the top of my head are:
1. concert this friday
2. tumblr
3. tired
4. corn flakes
5. spanish oral tomorrow
6. Christmas
7. i wanna eat.
so i haven’t really posted anything in forever. i’ve been very very busy.
Day 3- Eight ways to win your heart
hmmm. this is a tough one. for one reason it’s already been won. but i guess i’ll tell you anyway.
1. be _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. or Jesus. that works. or just be special and unique.
2. i have a music fetish. just saying.
3. i have a tendency of being favorable to intelligent people.
4. i like good attitude.
5. basically what the average person likes about another person.
6. unique people are interesting.
7. someone i can eat with and not rush me.
8. be yourself.
Day 2- 9 things about yourself
1) my name is chris cho
2) i’m very ticklish. especially around the sides. but shh!
3) i spaz out a lot. like mini-seizures. i don’t know why, i don’t have a disease or anything. i hope.
4) i should be doing homework right now
5) i’m not the person you think i am. unless your name is Jesus Christ or _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _.
6) i’m sick of people saying that cello is a “nerdy or uncool” instrument. it’s the coolest instrument ever. you’re just narrow-minded. there are many ways to play the cello and many styles you can play with.
7) i might show no emotion a lot of the time but i’m actually very emotional. but not in that sad/depressing way. i’m happy a lot. :)
8) i always end up falling asleep doing homework. it’s a very very bad habit i have.
9) i LOVE food. if you buy me food or make me food i will love you forever. that’s why i love my mommy. hahahaha
after this i swear i’m done with posts for today. but this is so much fun!
1. i love you
2. i miss you more
3. i’m hungry
4. you’re a crappy teacher
5. i wanna eat
6. really? wow. you suck.
7. you’re nice!
8. jack and jill went up a hill to fetch a pail of water
jack fell down and broke his crown and jill came tumbling (get it? tumblr? just kidding. @youngmin kim) after.
9. hey do you have euro notes?
10. are you ok?
